Are you passionate about the next generation of Jesus followers?  If so, you might be our next Children and Young People’s worker.  Having an intern working with us for the last year has led us to create this exciting new role to join our team.
 
Main responsibilities:

  • Co-ordinate our children and youth ministry 
  • Be part of our Renew HG1 Young People project
  • Initiate new ministries to engage with children and young people from the wider community 
 
Church context:  Harrogate Baptist Church is situated on the edge of Harrogate town centre. We have a growing group of children and young people, within an overall worshipping community of, on average 75 at our Sunday morning services.  We want to be more effective in helping our children and young people grow in faith as Jesus followers so we’re looking to appoint a part-time person, with suitable skills and enthusiasm, to join our ministry team as our Children and Young People's worker.  
 
The person will have suitable skills and experience to nurture and grow faith in children and young people, be able to partner with parents/carers and enable us to reach out and welcome families outside the church in creative ways.   We have just established a year-long, after school wellbeing project, seeking to support young people in developing their emotional and mental well-being.  We envisage this new appointment being an integral part of this team.  
 
The role will work closely with our minister and the Renew HG1 YP lead.  
 
Specific Responsibilities
The Children and Young People's worker will:
  • Provide relational, caring, innovative and inspirational leadership for our children and young people's ministry for 0-18’s
  • Plan and run Sunday morning children’s activities for 5-13’s in with others
  • Work with and encourage our church families
  • Recruit, co-ordinate, support and manage our team of volunteers
  • Be part of the team running our Renew HG1 YP project
  • Lead our youth cell group
  • Be involved in all age services and other special events across the year ie Christmas Eve Christingle service, as well as developing new one-off events such as alternative Halloween party, family fun days etc
  • Work with others in the area of safeguarding to maintain the highest standards of safeguarding procedure across our children and youth ministry
  • Report to the leadership team and wider church on a regular basis.
Person specification 
We are looking for someone with:  
  • A passion and desire to see children and young people of all ages grow and develop in their faith and love for Jesus 
  • Good people and communication skills, appropriate for connecting with children, young people and families, interacting with the church family and reaching the community
  • An ability to work on own initiative, as well as part of a team
  • An ability to encourage and lead a team of volunteers 
  • A proven record of developing ways of effectively connecting with families in the wider community, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity
  • A commitment to sustaining and deepening their own spiritual growth  

Particular requirement: There is a genuine occupational requirement that the person appointed is a committed practising Christian in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Key terms
Length of contract: 2 years, with a 3-month probationary period (with scope for the length of contract to be extended)
Start date: as soon as available 
Work pattern: 16 hours per week, to be worked flexibly but including weekend and some evenings.  There is a specific need to be available on a Sunday morning and Tuesdays between 3.30-5pm. 
Holiday: 25 days on a pro-rata basis
Salary: Between £7,500 and £10,000 depending on experience
Pension: n/a
Place of work: predominantly Harrogate Baptist Church and home working
Expenses: Agreed expenses will be reimbursed in full
Accommodation: none provided
Review: there will be a three-month probationary period and regular ongoing reviews.    
Termination of contract: During probationary period, one week’s notice on either side.  Post probationary period, one months’ notice of termination of employment will be required on either side.
Management: managed and supported by the minister 
DBS: an enhanced DBS check, and 2 references will be taken up prior to taking the post as part of our safer recruitment procedures.  Proof to work in the UK must also be provided.  The successful candidate will also be prepared to undertake safeguarding training.
